Nonny, thanks soooooo much for saying that!!!! You have NO IDEA how flattering it is since as the world’s only consulting enabler, Always Something is probably my greatest case. It was Sunday night on gchat with Clare that I remember fondly. 

So yes, I’m VERY aware of Always Something. I beta for it.

Just so you’re aware, I have done art for it but not in the way that I have for Clare’s other fics.  I am currently in the process of fully illustrating The Full House and the sequel Party of Four (and related fics).

I can’t draw Sherlolly and not think of Clare, so here you are, darling.

Molly couldn’t exactly be sure what had possessed her to do it. It wasn’t a good idea, not with his red runny nose and deep cough that would probably become pneumonia if he wasn’t careful. But seeing him standing there, defying the demands of his body while wearing an old dressing gown…every rational thought escaped her brain. She stepped into his personal space, ignoring his frown of confusion as she raised her heself on her toes and placed her hands right over his chest for balance. He didn’t move as she craned her neck and slipped her eyes shut, her lips pressing against his firmly. As far as first kisses went, it wasn’t spectacular nor did it immediately lead to anything more than a fusion of their mouths. Molly wouldn’t recall the excuse she had made to be there nor the wicked cold she had for a week after. She would only really recall the way that he’d placed his hands on her shoulders to hold her closer and when he’d come around to return the gesture. For my darling strawberrypatty who is a bit under the weather.

Molly couldn’t exactly be sure what had possessed her to do it. It wasn’t a good idea, not with his red runny nose and deep cough that would probably become pneumonia if he wasn’t careful.
But seeing him standing there, defying the demands of his body while wearing an old dressing gown…every rational thought escaped her brain.
She stepped into his personal space, ignoring his frown of confusion as she raised her heself on her toes and placed her hands right over his chest for balance. He didn’t move as she craned her neck and slipped her eyes shut, her lips pressing against his firmly.
As far as first kisses went, it wasn’t spectacular nor did it immediately lead to anything more than a fusion of their mouths. Molly wouldn’t recall the excuse she had made to be there nor the wicked cold she had for a week after.
She would only really recall the way that he’d placed his hands on her shoulders to hold her closer and when he’d come around to return the gesture.

I want to talk about Lexie for a moment.

Lexie— or Artbylexie as she’s know around here— is one of the best people I know in fandom. She is a wonderful and talented girl I have been privileged to know for about half a year now. Honestly, I don’t think people realize how sweet she is. To paraphrase Veronica Mars, if Lexie told me that cartoon birds braided her hair this morning, I’d believe her.

She is a remarkably talented and prolific fan artist. She is also incredibly giving with her art. She rarely does art just for herself. She does art for fics she likes and she’s frequently opening herself up to prompts from her followers. She doesn’t often outright ignore a prompt, even if it is outside of her comfort zone. Usually, she will try to find a way around the things in a prompt that make her uncomfortable, but she will do it.

There’s a few things I would like to state about Lexie, which I think has escaped some people’s notice:

1) Lexie loves Molly Hooper

I was going to say that “Lexie ships Sherlolly”, but this wouldn’t entirely be accurate. Lexie ships Molly/Happiness. She primarily works in the Sherlock/Molly and Molly/Martin ships, but I know she would also be willing to ship Molly/Greg and Molly/John. She focuses on a character who is a main character in the Sherlock universe, but does not really get that much attention.

Why is this important? Recently, she’s gotten quite a few comments about how she “fucked up John’s face” or her art would be better if “Molly was John instead”.

This is never going to happen. Lexie does not ship Johnlock. PERIOD. She has no problem with the people who do, until those people get up in her face. I don’t think you realize how upsetting this can be to an artist, to have their work insulted simply because it’s not a ship that appeals to certain people.

There are about a billion and five Johnlock fan artists out there. Please go and look at their blogs and leave the one artist who comes out with a dearth of Sherlolly alone.

2) Lexie know the context of every picture she does

This is actually something that applies to most artists I know. While a piece of fan art is only a snapshot, usually the artist knows the situation that’s going on in greater detail than the picture suggests. I say this as a fan artist myself. I know Lexie goes into even greater detail than I do. I was once chatting with her and I made a comment about what I thought was happening in the pic. Lexie then gave me a detailed description of what was actually going on.

It can be upsetting to have someone force their own idea of what’s happening in the picture onto it. Lexie is more than happy to talk about her idea about what is happening in the picture. Going out and pasting on a story to the picture is presumptuous. I think it should be a general rule that one should ask a fan artist first before they post a story based on their work. It actually goes both ways. A fan artist should also ask a fic writer if it’s okay to draw a picture based on their fic first. There needs to be better communication between the different facets of the fandom.

3) Basically, don’t do anything with Lexie’s art without asking her first

This should just be a rule with anyfan work. If you are going to do anything greater than reblogging a piece of art, ask first. Don’t manipulate, edit or do anything to a piece of art before talking to the artist. This is just common sense and common decency.

I haven’t told Lexie I’m posting this. But I’m incredibly protective of her. Like I said, she’s one of the sweetest people I know. There has been a lot of stuff happening with her art that is upsetting and making her just want to pack things in. Stuff she doesn’t want to say, because she is SO nice. But then, she has me. And I am not willing to stand idly by. I also feel incredibly guilty because I know Lexie started to do a lot more fan art after she started illustrating The Full House.

I like to think of talented, prolific fan artists as rare and beautiful unicorns. And if you don’t treat them right, THEY GO AWAY AND WE DON’T HAVE THEM ANYMORE.

This is probably the nicest and sweetest thing anyone’s done for me.
